How to Support Our California Farmers

Look for and buy fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, wine and nursery items grown in the state of California.

How do you know if it’s from California?

In The Store

Look for the CA Grown logo. This could appear on a sticker attached directly to produce, on packaging, or on store placards.

Look for CA Grown indicators. Legislation passed in 2009 mandating that stores are required to display the country of origin for produce. Look for a shelf card, if you can’t find CA GROWN, look for Grown in the USA. California grows over 400 different crops, from berries, to lettuce, grapes, sweet potatoes and more, if was grown in the U.S., there’s a good chance it was grown in the golden state.

Check PLU stickers or tags on produce. Often, these will list the country of origin.

If you still aren’t able to determine the country of origin, or are unable to find domestically grown options, ask to talk to the store manager. Your voice is powerful! Explain that you prefer California grown produce, and ask if they are able to accommodate your request for a specific item.

When checking out, the checker typically asks if you found everything that you were looking for. That’s another opportunity to speak up and let them know if you were unable to find the CA GROWN item you were looking for.

When buying milk, cheese, ice cream and sour cream, read the label, it will indicate where it was grown and produced.

Finding wine from California should be very easy, with over 3,900 wineries supplying 61% of the country’s wine, California wine should be readily available and the origin displayed clearly on the label.

Online Shopping

When shopping online, determining where your produce was grown can be a little trickier. Shopping apps don’t always list country of origin on the item’s information. Try clicking on the specific item to see if more information is listed.

If you can’t determine if an item is from California, when you check out, look for an instructions or notes icon. Add a note to request California grown produce if available.

Some apps enlist personal shoppers to shop for your groceries for you. Be sure to let your personal shopper know that you prefer CA Grown produce.
